"Then decide what you want for your property," Abemethy said briskly. "I would rather buy you out than to sell."

"I ain't selling, either. I told you that, too."

Cotton heard the scrape of a chair and steps as Abemethy moved toward the door. He said, "I am not like Malloy or his foreman, Donahue. I want nothing so much as to get along with my neighbors, but your position, Mr. Flagg, is hardly reasonable. Geography must be considered. I trust you will think it over carefully. Good evening."

Cotton stepped back, and stood in the middle of the hall. Abemethy didn't see him until he had cleared the door. Then he came to a sharp halt, surprise briefly mnning its path across his face, and dying.

"Howdy, Abemethy," Cotton drawled. "Fm sure glad to see you without that outfit of coyotes you're paying. Now mebbe we can decide right here and now whether there'll be peace on White River, or whether there'll be more killing and bumings like there have been. Fill your hand, Abemethy. We'll smoke it out right here."

"I beg your pardon," Abemethy said stiffly. "You are a murderer whose gun took life from Jackson Malloy and Red Donahue today. I would hardly be smart if I gave you a chance to do the same to me. Step aside, please."

"You sure lie, Abemethy, faster than my horse can mn. You know damned well I didn't kill Malloy—which right now is neither here nor yonder. You're bent on following the same dirty pattem Red Donahue set. Now I got nothing to gain except the satisfaction of knowing I done a good job. And mebbe I'd have a chance to live here in a country I like with folks I like, and know there's gonna be a reasonable amount of peace. That's why I'm aiming to kill you, Abemethy. I said, fill your hand."

"I am not a fool, Drennan," Abemethy snapped. "You should know that by now. The town marshal will arrest you, and you will hang for Jackson Malloy's murder. You will hang because I will be there to testify that I saw you pull the trigger. It would
